This half-day retreat, led by Carol and her daughter Holly Wren Spaulding, poet and educator, is an opportunity to spend time in and outside the studio, surrounded by art, poetry, luscious materials, and views of the sky and gardens. Participants will be guided through a process involving improvisational collage and other creative exercises to get you making objects of personal significance.

Formerly known as the "Annual Lilac Fest” at the Spaulding Homestead, this event resumes under the above new name, during Saturday and Sunday of the Memorial Day weekend. 

In addition to the Studios of Carol and Joe Spaulding, other artists in the immediate neighborhood will participate in a collaborating “Studio Crawl”. Nancy Miller (ceramics) will join the Spauldings. Other artists will be involved from their own nearby locations in the neighborhood. They include the following: Carrie Betlyn-Eder (sculpture), Cynthia Greig (art photography), Nik Burkhart (Painting), Margo Burian (painting), and Tom VanZoren (historical photos and books). “Messing Around with Paint” and “Messing Around with Paint, Paper and Paste” classes are offered during the fair weather seasons when we can take advantage of working outside in the pleasant surrounds of our family yard and garden as well as inside my studio.

Classes focus on either painting with gouache paints or mixed and painted paper collage work. I encourage experimentation, working in multiples, and maintaining an initial non-judgmental approach to one’s work. My intention is to help folks to develop an enjoyable and lively art making practice.
